meet ty
Ty is a trauma informed yoga and meditation teacher specializing in practices for stress and anxiety management.
Ty’s favourite part of teaching is connecting with others and guiding them to connect with themselves. Her most cherished classes are the ones where she can sense a tangible shift in the air as people access the beautiful calm that is inherently within them. This can be done in a myriad of magical ways. She believes life can be serious enough — yoga doesn’t need to be.
Ty had the privilege of falling in love with the art of yoga at a young age and it has shaped her path ever since. Her love for the craft took her to Bali, Indonesia in 2013. Here she studied at The Yoga Barn in Ubud through the Canadian Yoga School of Sacred Arts with Simone MacKay, Bex Tyrer, Tina Nance, and others. As the youngest student in her class, it was clear to Ty that she had a choice: stick with the conventional route she had laid out for herself or choose a life of adventure. I’m sure you can guess which one she chose.
Soon after Bali, Ty left her hometown of Kelowna, BC and followed her heart to Victoria, BC. Here, she supported the opening of an equestrian focused yoga studio as the Lead Teacher and Yoga Programs Coordinator. Around the same time, she taught kids yoga for students studying from all over the world as part of their health and wellness education at an independent school for girls. Community yoga classes through organizations like Sitka Surf and lululemon led Ty to deepen her roots on the island.
From 2016 - 2021, the path led Ty to Vancouver, BC where she completed several more teacher trainings. Ty has had the privilege of studying with incredibly talented yoga teachers and her work with lululemon afforded her relationships with some of Canada’s top teachers, notably drawing inspiration from the founder of One Yoga, Ryan Leier. Education experiences during this chapter include studying yin yoga with Jolene Bayda of Savoir Yoga, Feelosophy Yoga and Massage with Ashley Brodeur, trauma informed core training through Yoga Outreach with Nicole Marcia, and in 2019 Ty studied Yoga for the 12 Steps of Recovery with Nikki Myers in San Francisco, California. You may have crossed paths and taken classes with Ty in studios like TurF, The Garden Strathcona, Ride Cycle Club, Werklab, and lululemon.
In 2021, Ty moved to Boston, MA to support her husband’s career in orthopaedic medicine where he is a surgeon and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. While Ty and Ryan share many core values and beliefs, their literal marriage in Western and Eastern healing perspectives both challenge and complement the other. Ty believes all grounded teachers are also insatiable learners. She is often in a season of studying and will likely have a new course or certification on the horizon to deepen her work and offerings. In the Boston chapter, Ty completed numerous trainings across the country including intensive meditation, astrology, tarot, perinatal yoga, and more. It is here on the East Coast connected to communities like Salem, Massachusetts where Ty deepened her esoteric studies through a trauma informed lens.
While her roots will always be on the Canadian West Coast, you can now find Ty exploring the American East Coast with her pup, Pinot, a good book tucked under her arm, and the love of yoga and meditation still leading her to the most magical people and places.
